DK2 WAD Tool

Introduction

In order to speed up loading time some of the DK2 graphic files are stored in .WAD files. These WAD files are then unpacked in memory once they have been loaded. It is possible to have DK2 load the files individually rather than from the WAD files by using the command line switches -enablefilepatching and -enableartpatching.

DK2 WAD Tool will let you unpack the WAD files. Once unpacked it is possible to modify some of the files and witness those changes in the game. Note that not all the graphics used in DK2 are stored in WAD format.

The DK2 WAD Tool and the results of using it are unsupported by Bullfrog. This means that we have to give you a disclaimer.

WARNING. The DK2 WAD Tool and the results of using it are unsupported and not covered by any technical support agreement or warranty. The user applies these changes at their own risk, and with no guarantee of effectiveness. Downloading and using the DK2 WAD Tool

You can download the DK2 WAD Tool here.

WAD files contain files of various formats:

.PNG files
2D graphic files that can be viewed and modified in a program such as Paint Shop Pro.

.KCS files
Keeper Camera Sweep files. Used to control the camera. This is a Bullfrog proprietary format and cannot be modified.

.KMS files
Keeper Mesh Format files. These store the 3D meshes. This is a Bullfrog proprietary format and cannot be modified.

.SPR files
A sprite file. This is a Bullfrog proprietary format and cannot me modified.

.444 files
A bitmap file. This is a Bullfrog proprietary format and cannot be modified.

Use the DK2 WAD tool to unpack the files into the same directory the WAD file was in. When using -enablefilepatching and -enableartpatching the game will ignore the WAD files and use the individual files instead. When modifying the files ensure that the format remains the same. i.e. same dimensions, colour depth etc. Unfortunately it is not possible to repack the files back into a WAD file with the DK2 WAD Tool.

I've changed some data and now DK2 doesn't work. Help!

I refer you to the disclaimer at the top of the page. If desparate, an uninstall and reinstall will get you back to where you started.

Adding Command Line Switches

To add command line switchs to Dungeon Keeper 2 simply:

1. Open the Windows Start Menu and select RUN to open a dialogue box.

2. Type in the name and location of the DK2.exe program file, or use the browser to locate it, or use right-click on the program file to discover this information in its Properties. Simpler still, if you followed the installer's default options regarding where to install the game, then you can either copy the following exactly, or use cut and paste to place it in the RUN windows dialogue box: "C:\Program Files\Bullfrog\Dungeon Keeper II\DKII.exe"

3. Add the option to the end of the command-line, after the quotes, always leaving a space before each command-line option. For example: "C:\Program Files\Bullfrog\Dungeon Keeper II\DKII.exe" -disablegamma -nosound

Alternatively, you can create a shortcut to DKII.exe, open the shortcut's Properties and add the options to the command-line in the Shortcut dialogue box.
